Charles W. Smitherman III is a native of Dalton, Georgia and a graduate of Dalton High School. Dr. Smitherman attended Mercer University and graduated summa cum laude in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in political science and Christianity. Dr. Smitherman received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Georgia School of Law in 2002 where he also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Georgia Journal of International and Comparative Law. Dr. Smitherman gained admission to the Georgia Bar in 2002.
Following law school, Dr. Smitherman attended the University of Oxford in England where he earned a Master of Legal Studies degree in 2004 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2005. Dr. Smitherman focused his studies at Oxford on mergers and acquisitions and comparative law. At Oxford, he was a student at the Faculty of Law and Oriel College and a member of the Universities track team.Dr. Smitherman has authored a number of journal and law review articles pertaining to various legal issue. In 2006, he published his first book entitled Transatlantic Merger Cases.
Dr. Smitherman maintains a general litigation and corporate practice with a special concentration in personal injury, medical, malpractice and immigration law. He resides in Dalton with his wife Marina, son Liam and is expecting his second son in January 2013, and is an avid long course triathlete and runner.
